Essendon Project: A Clever Pool Design Makes A Splash

Sandown Project

We get it - a pool isn’t just about swimming laps. And it’s not always about going big, either. This one at Sandown was a good reminder for us that you can do a lot with not-so-much space, as long as you use it smartly. This was a family’s vision and we worked closely with them to get everything right, right down to every minute detail.

The thing is, they, wanted to use their pool a fair bit - for fun, for exercise, for some relaxing time. But, they didn’t want it to completely take over the outdoors. So, we designed a good-sized pool that was long (and could hold its own) but slim and stylish. In this home, there’s now a sleek pool that lets you have all that you want, and more. Because we were mindful of the limited space, everything we planned - and built - went back to this. So, yes, even though the pool is 10.58 metres long, it’s slender and actually leaves enough space to walk around (and have a party).

And if you thought a pool like this would take away from the already small backyard, well, that’s where our next trick came in handy. We built this pool right up against the house so that the entire open plan living room looks out at the pool. You’re never far from being outdoors even when you’re inside. With large glass windows, we were able to seamlessly (almost) blend the inside with the outside. So, when you’re standing in the living room (or the kitchen) you look out and see a beautiful waterfall in the pool - it’s quite a stunner!

It doesn’t just end at being good-looking, though. We wanted the pool to serve every practical purpose so we went ahead and also constructed a 7.5m x 9m concrete underground water tank (right under the paving, next to the pool). Along with a solar heating system, this pool is every bit practical and functional as it is great to look at!
