Swimming Pool Maintenance
Our Take on Pool Cleaning & Maintenance
Look, keeping a pool in decent shape shouldn’t be something that keeps you up at night. We’ve worked with heaps of Melbourne families to keep their pools running, and the truth is, most of us have made a few mistakes along the way. We’ve watched plenty of pools go from shocking to sparkling, and the most common reasons are always things that seem too simple to be the real issue. But consistent care, not just when things go pear-shaped, is the real trick.
A lot of people we talk to want a magic fix, or they’re feeling overwhelmed with the choices. It’s not always as straightforward as it looks, either. If you’ve stood in your backyard staring at a pool that’s gone green overnight, you’ll know what we mean.
What we do really comes down to prevention more than anything. Most issues we run into can be avoided with a bit of regular care. There’s no one big disaster that’s going to happen most of the time, it’s just bits and pieces that get missed in the rush of a busy week. The thing is, it’s easier to keep a pool clean than rescue one that’s gone to bits, so we try and stay on top of things.
Cleaning is the bit that seems to drive people round the bend, but it really does make all the difference. Weekly vacuuming and skimming is simple, but it works. It keeps water looking clear, and while it’s not fun, it’s less hassle than algae and bugs.
Chemicals seem to confuse a lot of people, too. Too much and you’ll know about it, not enough and things start going wrong pretty quickly. It isn’t too hard to get right once you know what you’re doing, it’s more about having a system and sticking to it. We tend to check things frequently so we can catch any trouble before it turns into a mess.
Another thing that always surprises people is how much your pump and filter matter. They work hard and take quite a beating, so if you don’t give them a bit of attention, they give up on you. They usually fail right when you need them most too, so we try and do a bit of care so they last and don’t suddenly leave you without a working system.
A bit we’ve noticed is the two types of pool owners - ones that do a bit every week, and those who wait until things get really bad. The consistent ones have fewer breakdowns, spend less on expensive fixes, and generally have more time to swim. That’s no surprise to us at all.
Melbourne weather seems to keep everyone on their toes, so we need to do things a bit differently here. Depending on what the weather is doing that week, your pool could need extra chemicals or some more frequent checks. You could be changing the way you clean or how you use your system. We tend to adjust what we do for the seasons and weather because the standard advice doesn’t always help when things change day to day.
The whole point for us is to make your pool something you enjoy. It shouldn’t be something you regret getting when you’re spending all weekend fixing it up instead of swimming. We want you to have family time or guests over without worrying about green water or broken gear. We get that you’re busy and we don’t expect you to know everything, so we’ve learnt what works.
